Hi everyone:
My name is Aaron. I organize a series of free activities called-‘Explore Beijing’ by myself. Mainly it’s about to visit some places related to Chinese culture and history. Every time, we have regular comers and new ones. The trip is free
Last time, we went through a reserved hutong area in the west of Beijing. Next Saturday (24 May) afternoon we will have a walking tour in a very long hutong. During the tour, we will pass the former residence of an amazing Chinese couple who held a top cultural salon in modern Chinese history. The wife was famous by her beauty and talents; the husband was a top one academician for Chinese ancient architectures and he was a very unfortunate intellectual who saw his efforts to protect the old Beijing became nothing when old architectures were demolished one by one from 1950s to1970s. We will also pass the old courtyard of John Fairbank who lived there with his wife in 1930s for his PhD. Dissertation. He knew many Chinese friends during that time by that salon. Later he became a top Sinologist and influenced Chinese study in states and Sino-US relationship. Banchan Lama is another spiritual leader in Tibet except Dalai Lama. The 10th Banchan’s house(1970s-1980s) was also in that hutong. We will also pass an old residence of a great Chinese economist who was famous by his argument with Mao Zedong’s idea on population policy under huge pressure from government in 1950s and 1960s. Finally, we will arrive at a place where a German ambassador was killed during Boxer Rebellion. During the tour, I will give some brief introduction on each site. We will have dinner together afterwards, but you can leave after the tour if you like.
On 24 May next Saturday at 3.00pm, we will meet at Jianguomen subway station exit A. Then we will walk to there together. To register or any question: maoseeking@yahoo.com
